We’re honoured that The Price of Gold has been awarded the Rik Davidson/Studies in Political Economy book prize for 2026! Here’s the citation:
“In a beautifully written and well-structured book, the Price of Gold provides meticulous primary research into the political and community impacts of mining in northern Canada. The authors’ primary archival research documents the role of state officials in advancing and attempting to moderate the impact of corporations, and the containment of the struggle over mining impacts within state structures. The book is also very rich in its ability to give voice to the resistance of the Dene First Nations, particularly by focusing on their creative activism in everyday and local environmental resistance. It convincingly integrates an analysis of mining companies, colonialism towards First Nations, environmental and health issues, and state regulations, providing an exemplary methodological strategy for political economy research. This book will be an important source for political economists who are working to understand extractivism in history and in the present.”
